For many parents there are few things more frustrating than seeing superstar athletes and movie stars receive a light sentence when they are caught with illicit substances. It is frustrating because it sets a bad example for our youth – ‘be famous enough and the law does not apply to you, be good enough at something and you can get away with things that others could not’. It somehow makes that type of behavior acceptable. That is why it is refreshing to see Louisiana State University (LSU) take a stand with one of their superstar college athletes, Tyrann Mathieu and suspend him for the entire year. He was dismissed from the football team for the entire season, even though he was considered one of the dominant cornerbacks in college football. It was a clear statement by the university that the violation of team rules has serious consequences, superstar athlete or not. Tyrann Mathieu later entered drug rehab for health reasons, ignoring his football career for the time being. (more…)
According to a recent study, 9 out of 10 high school students know someone who smokes, uses drugs, or drinks during the school day. According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, more than half of the high school students are aware of a location near or even on school grounds where they can get high during the school day. More than 33% of students admit that they can easily smoke, drink, or use drugs during a school day without having to be worried about being caught. (more…)
Studies show day treatment programs and drug-free recovery housing provide people struggling with opioid addiction the best possible chance of a full recovery. Even though most treatment options for opioid addiction do start with detoxification, many people still tend to relapse. According to information provided by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine researchers, the percentage of people that relapse after using detox as their only treatment is anywhere between 65 and 80 percent. A new drug rehab center that is being built in Lakeway Texas found out recently that not everyone was as delighted about its arrival as they had hoped. While construction crews were already working on the future site of the drug and alcohol rehab center, the head of the drug rehab center stood face to face with their new Lakeway neighbors during a meeting that was designed to answer any possible questions. To say that these new neighbors were less than pleased, would be an understatement. (more…)
